There are many ideas I thought when I read the topic : THE ROLE OF SCIENCE IN BUILDING A BETTER WORLD. About the utilization of energy resources, about making the eco-friendly technology’s products, about planting a million trees, about technique of non-emission recycling machine, about science that can bring us to the peaceful world, and so on. These all are role of science. It should be the right things that we have to do with our knowledge to build a better world. But now I would like to explain more about the things that able to actuate those prudently.
For me, basically there are two important things that we must do to build a better world by the science, those are: understanding the purpose of science and correcting our moral. Why? Well, now we start to discuss it.
The first, we will talk about the aim of science. By choosing the two as better world parameters not mean that I consider the science is not important. It gives a big advantage for our lifetime. But now, how do we use it for making a world better? I do believe, people have been learned a lot about everything. Since pre-history period until now there always the new invention. People never be run out of mind to analyze and create.
The teachers in school teach the students the lessons. But in my own sight, the biggest mistake is we never explained the goal of those lessons. Why must I study Chemistry in Atomic section? What do I study those for? Or why must I study Logarithm? What for? Because of never knowing the goal, so it might made me not interest to study it deeperly when I was in Senior High School.
I think, if the teachers give the brief explanation to their students about the goal of every lessons before teaching it, the students will be easier to understand that lesson. Anything, not only in the school, not only about lesson, if we know the advantage and goal of science we learn about, we will be more assure to understand it, not just be the duty only without any implementation. Of course, all sciences have a lofty purpose. So we must understand that aim as well as possible. This thinking way that could change the world to be better.
Secondly, correcting our moral. Why people are so busy studying science and technology yet studying about good moral just a little bit? Whereas, if the moral is good, all will be fine also. I do believe it. This world has been enough fulfilled by the clever people, so many development every year. But I think, we don’t need the clever people with bad moral, don’t we? How can we build the better world if instead we damage it with our knowledge?
Nowadays, there are so much developed technology exactly produce the emission which could damage our world. Why? Because we are unclear yet about the science’s goal. We are so selfish, don’t think about the next generation. Moreover, we have less care that this world, the earth which we stand on is the onliest of our habitat. No other planet can be our habitat. Then why don’t we keep it well? The scientists estimate that at summer 2040, whole ice in Arctic will melt if the quantity of emission still high.
I’m so sad when I watch a video about Global Warming which compare the earth now by the earth thirty years ago. So different and got worsen. In Indonesia, a little alteration of climate give a big impact. I can feel that. My currently hometown famous as a chilly town in Java, but now it same as the other city which so blazing in the day. Is it a result of advancement of science and technology? It should not have been like that.
There is something wrong with our attitude and cerebration. Because science never ever wrong. We take the wrong way to implement it. Because of that, please understand the goal and correct our moral. Like Indonesian old proverb said, “Knowledge without moral; blind. Moral without knowledge; crippled.” Do you want to be a blind or crippled person? Neither one, don’t you? Everyone want be perfect. Science and technology just tools that we can use to change the world. If those tools are good, complete, perfect, then our turn to use it prudently. Being a clever person is easy, but being a wise person is difficult.
